Noggin is a Nickelodeon brand. It was launched in 1999 as a joint venture between Nickelodeon and Sesame Workshop. It originally had two main branches: an American cable channel and a website called Noggin.com. The brand later expanded to include a mobile subscription app and programming blocks on international Nick channels.

Oobi was one of Noggin's flagship shows, and it first aired on Noggin in 2000. The channel was replaced by Nick Jr. in 2009. The brand was dormant for a few years, before it relaunched in 2015 with the release of the Noggin App. Since then, Nickelodeon has used the Noggin name exclusively for the app.

History

The Noggin channel was launched on February 2, 1999. Its target audience was originally pre-teens, with preschool-oriented shows only airing in early-morning timeslots.

Oobi started production in 1999 as the first original show ever made for the channel. It was initially a series of two-minute shorts that aired during commercial breaks. Noggin played the shorts regularly from 2000 to 2002. Nickelodeon also played them during its Nick Jr. block on weekday mornings.

In 2002, Noggin was changed to become a 24-hour preschool channel. The Oobi shorts continued to air, and in 2003, a season of 13 half-hour episodes were ordered. The first four full-length episodes were simulcast on Noggin and Nickelodeon on April 7, 2003. About a year later, Noggin ordered a second season of Oobi half-hours. The season premiered on September 6, 2004, and finished airing on February 11, 2005.

Noggin continued to air reruns of Oobi until 2009, when the Nick Jr. channel replaced it. Oobi moved to Nick Jr. from late 2009 until 2013, when most older shows were phased out of the schedule.

The channel has its own website, first launched in 1999. The site had an Oobi show page from 2000 until 2009. Since 2015, the site has been a guide to the Noggin mobile app.

In 2015, Viacom released a mobile app using the Noggin name and its mascots. The app features episodes and clips of Noggin and Nick Jr. shows. Oobi joined the selection of shows in May 2015 and stayed until March 2020.

Events

Noggin Presents Oobi Educational Tour North American Trade Show

Noggin hosted a few live events that featured Oobi. The first was the Oobi educational tour, which was open from June 2001 to 2002. It was part of the North American Trade Show Tour in Saint Paul, Minnesota. At the tour was a replica of Oobi's house, complete with a sunflower display and a mailbox. Visitors could take a photo with the display and get info about Noggin, which was still a new channel at the time.

In November 2001, Noggin featured the Oobi shorts as part of a film festival called Kids First. In June 2002, the restaurant chain Jillian's held a weekly event called Noggin Play Days. Visitors could watch a live feed of Noggin with themed activities. The Oobi shorts were featured as part of the live screenings, and a few of the activities were centered around the show.

From April 2004 to July 2006, Noggin held a monthly event called Club Noggin at malls across America. The club featured different characters each month, and attendees could watch the characters and make crafts based on them. Oobi was the featured character a few separate times, starting in September 2004. (source)

In November 2007, the Nick Hotel in Orlando, Florida started a promotion called "Noggin Month". One of the events was Oobi Arts and Crafts, based on the Oobi episode "Make Art!". Visitors could make Oobi-themed crafts and take home a pair of official Oobi Eyes. (source)
